For fourth-year human development major and SRWC Wellness Assistant Jessica Marie Talusan, working to promote wellness transformed her own journey in health and wellness.
“After getting healthy myself, I felt great and wanted to help and empower other people to do the same,” she said. “Joining Beach Balance was the perfect opportunity to do just that!”
As a wellness assistant, Jessica schedules massage appointments, nutrition counseling appointments and other daily programs. She also teaches the aromatherapy class, belays at the rock wall and helps at the outdoor shop. With a hand in many different areas in the SRWC, she enjoys seeing students being impacted in their wellness journeys.
“It’s encouraging to see others happy with what we provide, and it’s also held me accountable to my own wellness,” she said. “I’m passionate about health and wellness, but having this structure has taught me to have discipline and embody what I’m preaching.”
As part of the Beach Balance team, Jessica has built relationships with like-minded people who keep each other accountable to their health and wellness goals. For her, being a wellness assistant has as much to do with her own wellness and self-care as it does with what she promotes.
“My coworkers in the SRWC are like family,” she said. “I’m really proud to call them my coworkers, because they model what it’s like to stay healthy and do it the right way.”
