For some, going to work is just that – work. But for Nataly Kofman, working at the Student Recreation & Wellness Center (SRWC) is more than just a job title and an hourly wage; it’s a home away from home.
“Before I worked at the SRWC, fitness was really important to me in the sense that it was my stress reliever when dealing with hard things that were going on in my life,” said Kofman. “And I was coming from San Francisco, so I was trying to find my niche and my place here on campus. And the SRWC was my niche.”
Kofman, a senior healthcare administration student with a minor in health science, is one of two membership services leads at the SRWC. Since starting at the SRWC in 2017, Kofman’s duties have evolved from working the front desk and helping members to helping lead a team of students and maintaining communication between staff and members.
“Last semester, my duties were different than they are now because we didn’t have a membership coordinator” recalls Kofman. “So my fellow lead and I took on some of those duties, including managing the student staff and being the main line of communication between the administrative side and the over 10,000 members of the SRWC.”
Kofman credits her fellow student staff members for stepping up during this time. She also says that it was this period of time where she learned how to strike a balance between being a supervisor and a support system for the student staff while also being a student herself.
And her favorite part about working at the SRWC? “Definitely the people,” says Kofman. “All my best friends work here, my roommates work here. The people who I will be friends with for the rest of my life work at the SRWC.”
