Anthony Almeida has a passion for guidance and inclusivity, which makes him a perfect fit for the role of recreation sports coordinator at the Student Rec & Wellness Center (SRWC). Anthony has been involved with community outreach and recreation since graduating high school, through his time at LBSU, and since graduating as part of the class of 2014. His experience working in the Department of Parks & Recreation for the City of Commerce helped prepare him for the fast-paced environment of the SRWC where he thrives off of the energy of the students he is surrounded by.
“Interacting with students really makes my day,” he said. “It makes me want to come into work every morning – we are so lucky to have a group of fun, helpful students that enrich our programs in countless ways.”
One such program, intramural leagues, is overseen by Anthony. As part of his responsibilities, Anthony guides the league supervisors to ensure that the program is operating as it should. Anthony goes out of his way to prepare his student-staff team for their careers after they graduate, pushing them to be independent and confident in the work they do.
“Working with kids felt more like being a parent, but working here, I feel more like a cool uncle,” Anthony beautifully explained. “I’m here to offer guidance and advice when it’s needed, not to tell anybody what to do or dictate their choices.”
Although he’s only been working as recreation sports coordinator for a little over a month, Anthony has taken kindly to his role. He is most excited about growing the SRWC’s inclusive recreation program, which promotes the use of accessible equipment and support for students with disabilities.
“It’s one of the greatest things we do here,” he said. “Aside from creating a supportive community for students with disabilities, it connects students through genuinely fun recreational activities.”
Students interested in inclusive recreation should keep an eye out for upcoming events at the SRWC. With the first Inclusive Sports Expo earlier this year, students got to see what inclusive recreation is all about, and as Anthony said, “We can’t wait to bring more opportunities for student participation throughout the school year.” Under his direction, the program is likely to expand and improve exponentially.
“Being in this position has been an adjustment for sure, but it’s well worth the challenge,” Anthony said. “Working alongside talented students to provide for a well-deserving community is unlike anything else, and I can’t wait to see where it takes me.”
