Michael Freeman, affectionately known as Mike, was a beloved member of our ASI family. For over a decade, Mike dedicated himself to enriching the lives of students and staff across the Long Beach State University (LBSU) community. His innovative and creative spirit drove our esteemed aquatics program to a standard of excellence and inclusivity.

In 2010, at the start of his legacy, Mike helped open the Student Recreation & Wellness Center (SRWC), where he played a pivotal role in creating the aquatics program. Furthermore, Mike also volunteered to oversee our Inclusive program in 2012, when his title changed to Aquatics and Inclusive Coordinator. Mike was a trailblazer in the realm of inclusive recreation at the SRWC. He advocated for equal access and opportunities for every individual. He created various inclusive programs, including wheelchair basketball, goal ball, blind yoga and Zumba Sentao.

Mike also taught several fitness classes at the SRWC, including self-defense and mixed martial arts. He eventually became the Aquatics and Safety Coordinator where he brought a tenacious passion for safety training to the SRWC and ASI. Although we grieve the loss of such an influential figure, we also celebrate his extraordinary contributions. His memory will continue to inspire us in upholding the values he embodied. We will continue to follow in his footsteps and strive to create a positive impact in the lives of others.

Mike’s impact and legacy will continue to endure through the SRWC aquatics program. However, the true testament to his life is the memories he forged with his student staff. Mike loved his students, and they continue to demonstrate that he touched the lives of everyone he came across.

The SRWC will not be the same without you, Mike. May you rest in peace, and forever know that you are in our hearts.
