Boxing is not just about stepping into a ring and trying to make someone “go to sleep.” It has a wide range of implications—from high intensity interval training (HIIT) workouts to working with seniors. Boxing can increase your hand-eye coordination, strengthen your bone density to prevent osteoporosis in your later years, provide a great cardio workout and increase muscle endurance.
I started the boxing program at the SRWC because I wanted students to have a chance to try out what I am most passionate about. Students love learning the sport of boxing, and it’s great that they can receive a great workout while doing so.
My class is based on a HIIT-like format. A good thing with boxing is that it is adaptable to any fitness level. It so adaptable, in fact, that I have been able to start up a business with a boxing class (non-contact) centered on seniors. My team and I go to senior homes and communities to offer a boxing-inspired workout to the residence.
That’s what I have found most amazing with boxing—that I have trained everyone from professional athletes to a 91-year-old lady with boxing, and everyone is throwing the same exact punches!
If anyone is interested in the boxing classes, they take place on Mondays and Wednesdays in the SRWC Fitness Room from 4 to 5 p.m. and 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. They are $30 for the rest of the semester, but feel free to visit and try it out to see how you like it first!
