If you’re walking by the fitness desk, make sure you stop and say “Hi” to new Fitness Graduate Assistant Cecilia Guererro!

Currently in her second year of her master’s program in kinesiology, Guererro helps oversee the personal training program while also promoting fitness-related events, programs and services that the SRWC offers. “I’m really excited to help out with all of the events that I participated in as a student,” said Guererro. “But this time, I’m excited to actually be working these events.”

Guererro has attended group exercise classes, completed rock wall challenges and even received nutritional advice from Beach Balance. “As a student, I love that the SRWC has so much to offer and that you don’t have to be a ‘pro’ in order to participate in programs.” Part of Guererro’s excitement also stems from the chance to apply what she’s learning in her kinesiology classes to her position at the SRWC.

“There’s a big connection between my education and my client’s,” said Guererro. “I’ve been able to pull from my classes, like anatomy and help my clients reach their goals.”

Guererro shared some words of advice to those who are struggling to stay on track:

  1. Find a friend that can keep you motivated!

“I appreciate my friends that tell me ‘You can do it!’ or ‘You should really go!’ when I don’t feel motivated to workout. If that friend joins you, even better! That way, you can keep each other accountable. Sometimes, it takes someone else saying ‘But you said you’d go’ that keeps you moving.” Give yourself small rewards!

  2. Set goals and reward yourself!

“Set a (preferably not food-related) attainable goal and think about the reward you would want to receive, like new workout shoes, a massage, etc. Knowing that you can only get that reward after you’ve completed your goal can be motivating.”

  3. Put positive reminders everywhere!

“Put them in your room, on your phone, in your planner. I use the ‘Reminders’ app on the iPhone to set timed reminders about my goals throughout the week. I find it helpful because it reminds you when you’re not thinking about it. It’s even better if your reminder is related to your reward.”

Ultimately, Guererro said that finding a time and making that your time to work out, even if it’s just 45 minutes in your day is the best route to take. “Workouts can help take away a lot of the stress from your day; it gets you out of your head and in the moment.”
