The purpose of the SRWC can be tangibly seen as members utilize it in an effort to pursue a healthy lifestyle. CSULB Administrative Coordinator for the Controller’s Office Betty Fujikawa is one such member.
“I have been working out at the SRWC for about three years, and it’s given me an opportunity to improve my fitness--which then improves my overall health,” says Fujikawa. “It’s a great way to feel better and gain health benefits at the same time.”
Fujikawa was a winner of this year’s Summer Wellness Program, a program that gives staff, faculty, and alumni an incentive to work out over summer by giving points for workouts and entering them into a drawing to win an annual membership. The program gave her a habit of working out 3-5 times a week, where she implements cardio workouts along with strength weight training.
“I really like the variety of equipment that is available, and I rarely have to wait because there are a lot of machines,” says Fujikawa. “Plus, it’s a very motivating atmosphere!”
Overall, Fujikawa’s time at the SRWC has translated into a lifestyle that regularly esteems both physical and mental health. She encourages students to utilize the SRWC for its variety of equipment and classes, as well as its potential to be a great stress reliever.
“Working out at the SRWC has been a very positive experience and now exercise has become a regular part of my day,” says Fujikawa. “The benefits of exercise are much more than the physical improvements. It teaches you that you can do more than you think; there’s no way around hard work; and if you keep going, you’ll get better!”
