As one of the SRWC’s most consistent members, Shirley Armes is proof that the Rec Center’s top-of-the-line equipment and facilities are not restricted to current LBSU students. Shirley is an alumna from 1970, and she still carries her pride for The Beach with her everywhere she goes.
She first began her fitness routine as a member of Frog’s Fitness, a public exercise club that utilized the Walter Pyramid’s gym equipment to serve hundreds of active students and residents of Long Beach.
“We were all close to each other – faculty, staff, students, members of the community – and many of us are still close to this day,” she remarked. “When the SRWC opened in 2010, many of us followed the students and began exercising there instead.”
Now, as a retiree with self-care always on her mind, Shirley utilizes the SRWC to a great extent. To this day, she is unquestionably consistent in her workout routine, which she and her husband share daily.
“We love the equipment here,” she said. “The track, treadmills and other cardio-equipment help us maintain a healthy blood-pressure and keep our energy up.”
Among many things, Shirley appreciates the diversity in the age of SRWC members. She and her husband help break the stereotype that the gym is only for a specific demographic or age group.
“It’s just such a nice place to come and stay active,” Shirley said. “Everybody should see what they have to offer – the equipment, the facilities, the staff and every other feature of the SRWC easily make my membership worth it!”
Shirley is being featured as a part of our Membership Spotlight series in Rec Report.
