Craving something more raw and grungy in your workouts? You can flip tires and slam sledgehammers in junkyard fitness—a simple but challenging class with fierce, full-body workouts done entirely outside.
“We do all the ‘poor man’s’ workouts,’” said class instructor Anthony Gonzalez. “Where I come from, we couldn’t afford a fancy gym—but I believe that you don’t need a lot of stuff to get a good workout in.”
Junkyard fitness is a high-intensity interval style class with functional fitness, agility work and performance workouts. Participants do short sets at six to eight stations, using simple equipment like sandbags, medicine balls and even each other.
“I want to give students access to tires aside from just personal training,” said Gonzalez. “Tires offer a full-body workout with a rough feel. And all the workouts can be easily manipulated so that everyone can benefit.”
The class takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5 p.m. at the sand volleyball court. It is $42 for 6 weeks and is open to all members. Those interested can try a free session as well.
“It’s definitely a challenging class, but everyone can grow into it,” said Gonzalez. “I want to tailor it so that everyone can be challenged equally with the right workout for them. It’s all respective to your body.”
